Welcome to Deception Bay Flexible School, a vibrant and inclusive learning community where strong relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We are a place where young people are treated with dignity, respect and a genuine belief in their potential.
Since opening in 2006, our purpose has been to support young people who may have experienced challenges in mainstream education, helping them reconnect with learning, develop confidence and discover pathways for a positive future.
We recognise that every young person’s story is different. Rather than expecting students to fit a single model of schooling, we work alongside them to create meaningful learning experiences that are relevant, flexible and achievable.
At Deception Bay Flexi, young people are supported to build positive relationships, develop a sense of belonging and engage in learning within a safe, welcoming and encouraging environment.
We understand that success looks different for everyone and that meaningful learning flourishes when people feel valued, heard and respected.
Our approach is strengths-based, focusing on each young person’s abilities, interests and aspirations. We believe all young people have the capacity to thrive when provided with the right relationships, opportunities and support. As part of the Edmund Rice Education Australia Flexible Schools network, we are guided by the values of Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, Justice and Solidarity, and by a commitment to providing a liberating and empowering education.
Young people’s voices play a central role in our community. We work to remove barriers to participation and achievement while supporting young people to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to pursue their goals and contribute positively to their communities.
Our school community is guided by four core principles:
- Respect
- Participation
- Honesty
- Being Safe and Legal
These principles provide a shared foundation for how we learn, work and relate to one another. They shape our culture, guide decision-making and help create an environment where everyone can feel safe, respected and connected.
Our team includes
- teachers
- youth workers
- wellbeing practitioners
- external support partners
who work collaboratively to support young people and their families. We do not see our role as fixing young people. Instead, we focus on creating the conditions in which they can flourish by building strong relationships, fostering a sense of belonging and providing opportunities for growth and success.
Learning at Deception Bay Flexible School extends beyond traditional classroom experiences. We offer flexible pathways that respond to the unique strengths, interests and goals of each young person. Some of these are:
- project-based learning
- accredited courses
- vocational pathways
- outdoor education
- creative arts programs
- wellbeing initiatives
- community engagement opportunities
We believe education is about more than academic achievement. It is about connection, identity, purpose, hope and the opportunity to build a positive future.
If you are considering Deception Bay Flexible School for yourself, your child or a young person you support, we encourage you to explore our enrolment information and learn more about our approach. We also welcome the opportunity to meet with you, answer your questions and show you firsthand what makes our community unique.
