Deception Bay Flexible School

Deception Bay Flexible School began as an inclusive learning community in 2006 and is part of Edmund Rice Education Australia, a national and unified network of Australian schools and educational entities.

As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition Deception Bay Flexible School embraces a Charter which upholds four touchstones – Liberating Education, Inclusive Community, Justice and Solidarity and Gospel Spirituality.

These touchstones, an authentic expression of the spirit of Edmund Rice founder of the Christian Brothers, underpin its educational endeavour.

Deception Bay Flexible School is co-educational and invites secondary school age young people into a community that encourages and nurtures strong healthy life giving relationships that support lifelong learning.

Deception Bay Flexible School has a strong focus on social justice and stands in solidarity with disenfranchised young people of all social, cultural and religious backgrounds.

The philosophy also has a practical focus, based in the application of four core principles of “Respect” (for self, others and environment), “Safe and Legal” environment, “Participation” (have a go) and “Honesty” (being fair dinkum) among all participants of the Deception Bay Flexible School.

This is evident in the ways the organisational culture and practices are shaped through the application of these principles.

In essence, the principles establish a “common ground” among staff, students and parents, a collective forum, where the means to resolve conflict, negotiate learning, recognise rights, responsibilities and consequences are modelled and explored, both within the group, and individually and as members of the broader community.

The philosophy and practice of the school is aligned with the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration.
